Frequently asked questions

These are the questions we are asked most often — about price, permits, the season, stumps and emergency call-outs. If you can't find your answer here, put it in your enquiry.

Price and quotes

How do I find out the price?

Fill in the form and describe what you need. We get back to you within 5 minutes with a quote. We don't have a single price list, because two trees of the same height in different places are completely different jobs. We have explained every factor that affects the price on the prices page.

Why do photos matter so much?

Because they answer the very questions we would otherwise have to ask you out loud — only more accurately. From a picture we can see the height of the tree, the thickness of the trunk, the lean, what is around the tree, and whether machinery can get in. Four shots do the job: the whole tree with something of known size beside it, the base of the trunk, the surroundings and the access route.

Is a site visit necessary?

Not always. For most ordinary jobs, photos are enough. A site visit is needed if the tree is growing very close to a building, if there is a suspicion of rot at the base of the trunk, if access is tight, or if the health of the tree has to be assessed. If a visit is needed, we say so when we reply to your enquiry.

How quickly do you reply?

We answer ordinary enquiries within the working day. Mark urgent ones as urgent — we look at those first.

Emergency work

Do you come out the same day?

In an emergency we try to come out the same day. We tell you the realistic time when we reply. It depends on the time of day, the weather and how many call-outs there are on a storm day — after big storms demand is high, and we will tell you honestly if we can't come straight away. More on this: emergency tree removal.

Can you take away just the dangerous part?

Yes, and often that is the right answer. First we make the site safe — we take away whatever poses an immediate risk and release the tension in the trunk. Full clearance can follow separately, if that makes more sense and works out cheaper.

If a tree is down on power lines

Do not go near it and do not try to pull anything away, even if the cables look undamaged. Contact the emergency service of the electricity network operator first. We work only after the line has been switched off or the operator has given permission.

What happens to the material

Do you take the branches away?

Yes, that is included in the job. We chip the branches or gather them up and take them off your property. We don't leave wood chip in the garden.

Can I keep the firewood?

You can. Say so in your enquiry — we cut the trunk and the thicker branches to length and stack them wherever you tell us. The sawdust and the fine brash we take away regardless.

Permits and rules

Do I need a permit to have a tree felled?

For some trees outside forest land — yes. The rules in Rīga and in each surrounding municipality differ slightly, and the species, trunk diameter, location and land use all matter. We check this for each individual tree. More: tree felling permits.

Do I have to arrange the permit myself?

No. If a permit is needed, we arrange it for you. You don't have to go round the authorities yourself.

Does a dead tree need a permit?

The requirements for dead and dangerous trees are often simpler, but "it's a dead tree" is not an automatic exemption — in many cases you still need at least a sign-off or a formal record before felling. Never start from the assumption that no permit is needed. We check it for you.

What counts as a protected tree?

Exceptionally large trees — heritage trees — and trees in protected areas are protected, and nothing may be done to them without approval. If it turns out that your tree falls into that category, we tell you. More: heritage and protected trees.

My neighbour's tree has branches coming over — what should I do?

A tree belongs to the owner of the land it grows on, even where the branches reach across the boundary. Cutting branches off a neighbour's tree yourself can end in a dispute or in liability. The right order is to agree it with your neighbour, and then the work can be ordered jointly. More: neighbours' trees and liability.

Season and planning

What time of year is best for felling and pruning?

For felling, winter is often the best time: there are no leaves, so the structure of the tree is easier to see, the garden is dormant, and frozen ground lets machinery in without damaging the lawn. For pruning, the right time depends on the species and on the aim. In spring and early summer the bird nesting season has to be taken into account. Emergency work we carry out in any season. More: when to prune trees.

Does the tree definitely have to come down?

Often not. A fungus on the trunk, a few dead branches or a thinner canopy don't always mean the tree has to go. Sometimes it is enough to take out the deadwood or reduce the weight of the crown. If the tree can be kept, we say so — even when that means less work for us. For what we actually check, see the tree health assessment.

Stumps

What happens to the stump after felling?

After felling, the stump is left cut low. If you want the spot usable straight away or turfed over, we grind the stump out — usually on the same visit, which is cheaper than doing it separately.

How deep is a stump ground out?

It depends on what is going in the spot. For lawn, shallower grinding is enough; for a new tree, paving or building work we have to go deeper. Tell us what the plan is and we'll adjust the work to suit.

Access and machinery

Can you work where there is no vehicle access?

Yes. In tight spots we work with rope access: the arborist climbs the tree and lowers it in sections, under control, and we carry the material out. It takes longer than working with machinery, but it can be done. More: tree removal without vehicle access.

Will the machinery damage the lawn?

It can, if the ground is soft. That's why we warn you about it beforehand and offer the options: work in dry or frozen conditions, lay ground protection mats, or work on ropes with no machinery at all. If there is a risk, you know about it in advance rather than after the fact.

Do you work near power lines?

We do work near power lines, but on the condition that the safety clearances and any disconnection are arranged first by the electricity network operator. That isn't our call to make, and it isn't a place for improvisation. More: tree removal near power lines.

Clients and area covered

Do you work with businesses and property managers?

Yes. We work with companies, property management firms, apartment block managers and public institutions. For regular upkeep of a site there is the option of a tree care contract with scheduled inspections.

Where do you work?

Rīga and roughly a 50 km radius: Jūrmala, Mārupe, Ķekava, Salaspils, Ādaži, Olaine, Babīte, Piņķi, Baloži, Ikšķile, Ogre, Sigulda, Carnikava, Saulkrasti, Baldone, Stopiņi, Garkalne, Ropaži, Jelgava and everywhere in between.

Why isn't there a phone number?

During the working day the arborist is up a tree, on ropes or working machinery, and simply can't answer at that moment — and that is how enquiries get lost. A written enquiry, by contrast, we see, and every one gets an answer. You can attach photos to the form, which lets us give you a real quote rather than just promising to come out, and it leaves a written record of what was agreed. How that works in practice — about us.
